How to choose a passport photo background

Use the required physical background and avoid prohibited alterations.

Follow the selected authority

Background rules vary by country, document and submission channel. Use the authority link shown with the preset and read the current instructions before taking the photograph. A white background is not a universal rule. A verified reference date describes when a source was checked, not a promise that the rules will remain unchanged.

Retake instead of editing when required

For verified rule references, this tool preserves the original background and disables digital replacement. Use even lighting and the required plain physical background at capture time. Automated brightness and blur warnings cannot certify colour uniformity, shadows or compliance.

Treat custom templates as custom

Unverified country references and the Custom option are editable sizing aids, clearly labelled as not verified compliant. They allow background replacement for drafts or other non-official uses. Do not assume that a digitally replaced background will be accepted. Canadian passport references explicitly require professional capture and printing; a generated sheet is only a reference.
